Dear Parents, Students, Staff and all associated with St Catherine's School Community
Last weekend saw the universal Christian church commence the all important week that leads us to reflect on the days leading up to the death and the resurrection of Jesus. Sunday celebrated the entry of Jesus Christ into Jerusalem. For many Christian churches Palm Sunday, often referred to as "Passion Sunday", marks the beginning of Holy Week. Holy Week concludes this coming weekend with the high point of the Church's calendar and the celebration of Easter Sunday.
The Bible reveals that when Jesus entered Jerusalem, the crowds greeted Him by waving palm branches and covering His path also with palm branches. Immediately following this great time of celebration in the ministry of Jesus, He began His journey to the cross. As Jesus paused on the Mount of Olives before coming down into Jerusalem, He was staring into the face of His own suffering and death. This was the city where, within a week He would be betrayed and deserted by the ones He loved, where He would be beaten and handed over by His own people to the authorities, tried and condemned to death. It is said that in all this He could see the front side of His own passion, and that despite what He saw, His Palm Sunday march went on. Here was Jesus facing up to the realities of His own destiny.
Because of our own human nature, we each have our own private Palm Sunday march where we might be exposed to personal pain or illness, loss of a loved one, family problems, lack of financial ability, loss of employment, difficulties with our children or perhaps a growing sense of emptiness. For each of us there is a time when such hardship comes, and sadly for some, such times can seem intense and even ceaseless. We are to keep in mind that even God knew a time for tears, and that in it, He did not despair.
Just as Jesus paused on His Palm Sunday, we too might take time to overview the journey or our own life, to draw strength from the courage Jesus showed accepting the realities of His life. Maybe we might pray for a strong faith in our life so that Easter and the Resurrection are beacons at the end of our personal Palm Sunday March.
“Jesus, may I draw strength and courage into my life by asking You to walk with me as I confront the challenges in my daily life. Amen.”
Happenings Around the School
- Year 4 Camp to Phillip Island - This morning, our Year 4 students departed for their 2-day camp to Phillip Island. There was certainly great excitement amongst the students as they looked forward with anticipation to involving themselves in the various activities, experiences and opportunities planned.
Sincere thanks to the parents who are volunteering their time to assist at the camp as well as to the teachers who have put an enormous amount into organising the experience.
- Staff Farewell - As we come to the close of the term, we bid farewell to Mr Daniel Bishop. Daniel has recently accepted an ongoing position in a new school which opens up at the commencement of Term 2. The new position affords Daniel the opportunity to work with students within a secondary context.
Whilst we acknowledge that Daniel has only been with us for a very short period, we thank him for the contribution that he has made and wish him well in his upcoming appointment.
General Information
- Final Day for Term 1 - This Thursday, 1 April will see the close of Term 1. Students will resume Term 2 on Monday, 19 April 2021.
- Year 5 Camp - Week 2 of the new term will see our Year 5 students embark on their trip to Sovereign Hill. The trek to Ballarat provides a wonderful opportunity for students to explore a little more about Australia’s history. No doubt students are looking forward to the experience.

Whole School Approach to
Positive Behaviour Support
Wow! What an extraordinary first term we have had! It has been a term of changing seasons, both in our environment and in our Church calendar. Students have shown incredible resilience, adaptability, persistence and patience in navigating the return to school post-covid and the hiccups we’ve encountered along the way. The ripple effect of the circuit-breaker lockdown a few weeks ago was felt within the dynamics of our school community, as different emotions and behaviours were expressed. As educators, we know, ‘all behaviour is communication’. All people behave in ways in order to communicate and fulfill basic needs: for survival, power, freedom, fun, love & belonging.
- Which need/s were you hoping to meet?
- How did you go about achieving this?
- What choices (thoughts/actions) did you make to help you get what you want?
- How were you feeling?
- What was your body telling you?
Staff at St Catherine’s continue to foster a whole school approach to positive behaviour support. Teachers know, collaborate and plan for engaging learning experiences which cater for student’s different needs and interests. This is our core business. We also aim to instil strategies and skills to grow as productive, kind and active contributors in society. When we teach students to Notice and own our actions, we are wanting them to recognise their feelings, use a growth mindset approach and then act in a positive way.
This week and over the holidays, have a conversation with your child about how they view their first term at school. What were the challenges they feel they faced and how did they overcome these? Acknowledge with them, that noticing and owning your actions is part of a positive approach to learning and building relationships.
Have a blessed Easter break and well-earned rest over the holidays.

From our SHINE Leaders
On Monday 29 March, nine students from Years 3-6 competed at the Southern Metropolitan Region Swimming Carnival at the magnificent Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre.
All representatives swam to the best of their abilities but faced stiff competition from the other swimmers in the region.
An outstanding achievement to progress through to the Regional finals. All students should be proud of themselves as we are of them!
A big thanks to the parents of the student representatives who arranged transport for the students and supported them at the carnival event in Melbourne.

Hello Everyone
Well, we have entered the most significant week of our Lenten journey; Holy Week. It started last Sunday being Palm Sunday and finishes with Jesus’ resurrection.
I always find it fascinating how in one week Jesus can go from triumphantly entering Jerusalem to walking the ill fated path to his death. What does it mean for us?
I believe that it means hope and love, hope for the future and the ultimate sacrifice of giving one’s life for others. One of the most important messages for this moment, is as Jesus dies, a centurion standing by utters the inspired words, ‘In truth, this man was a son of God.’
The centurion who was a gentile, represents all those throughout the world who will recognise the truth of Jesus’ life and purpose.
Peter is an interesting character in the gospels. He is one of the first of the disciples to be called; Jesus changes his name and places great trust in him; he is witness to the most significant moments of Jesus’ life; he is able to profess his faith in Jesus as the Christ and yet it is he who denies even knowing Jesus.
We might have thought that Peter was Jesus’ most loyal and faithful follower, yet it is he who can’t stand up and claim that he was a follower of Jesus. Is it any wonder that it is difficult for us today sometimes?
Sacrament of Reconciliation - 2020 Candidates
Just a reminder that the Sacrament of Reconciliation will be held next term for our Year 4 students and some Year 5 students, who did not have the opportunity to celebrate this sacrament last year.
Class teachers and I have been working with the Sacrament of Reconciliation candidates re-preparing them to ensure readiness for this sacrament.
The Sacrament of Reconciliation will be held in the Chapel in class groupings. Celebrating the Sacrament of Reconciliation per class allows us to adhere to the COVID-19 safety requirements for schools.
The dates and times are as follows:
4S3 Thursday 29 April 12:00-1:00pm
4S7 Wednesday 5 May 12:00-1:00pm
4S8 Thursday 6 May 12:00-1:00pm
4S4 Wednesday 12 May 12:00-1:00pm
Yr 5s Wednesday 12 May 12:00-1:00pm
I would like to take this opportunity to wish you all a very safe, happy and holy Easter.
Yours in Faith

Return to Normal
As of Week 2, Term 2 all students will be required to be at school for our 'normal' start time of 8:50am.
When students arrive after 8:50am, they will be marked as late.
The late minutes are recorded and deducted from attendance.
- Students who are late miss out on crucial information at the beginning of the day.
- When students arrive late, they become anxious.
- Students arriving late to their class causes disruption or distraction to the learning of others - which is just not fair.
A student's attendance rate significantly impacts on their educational outcomes or levels of achievement.
Please use Week 1 to reorganise your schedule and practise arriving ontime to minimise:
-
-
-
-
-
- disruption
- loss of learning time
- anxiety

-
- no texts
