Dear Parents, Students, Staff and all associated with St Catherine’s Community
That which is Christ-like within
us shall be crucified. It shall
suffer and be broken. And that
which is Christ-like within us
will rise up. It shall love and
create.
Michael Leunig
Easter greetings to all! As we return for the ten weeks that will be Term 2, the Church worldwide continues to celebrate the joy and wonder of the Easter season. “Alleluia, Alleluia, Christ has risen” is the catch-cry that lies at the heart of our celebrations as we rejoice in the knowledge that Jesus has conquered death and been brought to new life, guaranteeing for each of us the promise of eternal life. This is the core of our faith and indeed cause for much to celebrate.
Welcome
Welcome back to all families for Term 2. Both staff and students appear to have returned from the 2-week break rejuvenated, enthused and ready to tackle the 10 weeks ahead. Certainly noted has been the slight shift in the ‘seasons’ with the more anticipated autumn weather being experienced since breaking for the Term 1 holidays.
I wish all families, students and staff every best wish as they commence the new term.
Happenings Around the School.....
- Year 5 Camp - Earlier today, our Year 5 students departed on their 3-day/2-night trip to Sovereign Hill. The trek to Ballarat provides a wonderful opportunity for students to explore a little more about Australia’s history. Students will return no doubt a little more weary than when they departed, but a great experience will no doubt be had by all. Once again, we thank staff and parents who have looked after the students, going over and above to support such initiatives and giving generously of their time.
General Information
- Footy Jumpers - Please note that the tradition of wearing footy jumpers on Monday, if supporting one of the weekend winning teams, continues and is happily supported.
- Insight SRC Annualised Surveys - Each year, schools across the Diocese are required to survey students, parents and staff as part of our annual reporting requirements. Participation by all various stakeholders with a vested interest in what we do at St Catherine’s enables a rounded perspective to be gained.
The purpose of the survey is to provide valuable information that can be used in planning and accountability processes. It also enables a focus for reflection, evaluation and improvement and informs the development of the school’s Annual School Improvement Plans.
This year’s survey is now open online and will close Friday, 7 May. Staff and selected students from Years 3-6 will complete the survey. To ensure this balance of views, it is critical that parents have the opportunity to also have their say. With that in mind, we are calling for 60 parents to complete the survey, either on paper or online.
Parents who would be interested in completing this survey are asked to make contact with the School Office. A copy of the survey information and material can either be collected from the School or alternatively sent home with the eldest child. Completed paper surveys are to be returned to the Office sealed in the “Confidential” envelope provided by this Friday, 7 May.
- Use of School Facilities by Outside Providers - Use of school facilities by outside providers remains unchanged as directed by DOSCEL. Currently, requests from outside providers during the school day will be permitted where the use relates to student learning and the delivery of the Victorian Curriculum or essential services to the school such as uniform suppliers and oustide of school hours care.
All other requests are considered on a case by case basis and where they can operate outside or adjacent to school hours such as Karate. - School Fees - School fees for Term 2 will be issued to each family by this Friday. Fees for the term are required to be settled by Friday, 21 May, unless alternative arrangements have been discussed.
Families who hold an eligible Health Care Concession Card, may be eligible for CSEF (Camp, Sports and Excursion Funding). If eligible, this would also entitle families to make an application for a fee remission, which effectively would see a significant reduction of fees to be paid. For more information, please do not hesitate to speak with Margaret Lonergan.
The cash flow of the school’s budget is directly determined by payment of all fees within the set time frame. However, where there are genuine cases of hardship in meeting payment of fees, I invite you to discuss fee remissions with me. I am very much aware that these are difficult times. Please be assured that such arrangements are made in total confidence. It does, however, enable us to maintain a more accurate perspective of the school’s financial position in our efforts to deliver a quality Catholic Education.
Yours in Catholic Education

Whole School Approach to
Positive Behaviour Support
Welcome back to Term Two!
We now feel the brisk onset of autumn and the winter months ahead cause us to prepare for comfort and warmth. There may be days when we need to stay inside at recess and lunch. From a teacher perspective, it is always an interesting experience observing students at play on ‘wet weather’ days. The types of games change and students interact with classmates who they wouldn’t necessarily play with out in the yard. Last year at this time, remote learning provided opportunities for us to slow down and enjoy the simple things. Board games were dusted off, colouring books and puzzles invested in and more time spent baking, reading, crafting and constructing. As we come into the cooler months, we can build on the positives and opportunities from last year to complement our time at school this year.
Whether students are learning or playing at school, the expectations of SHINE remain the same. All people have a right to stay safe, be treated with respect and engage in their learning. Therefore, we all have a responsibility to interact with each other appropriately and notice and own our actions. Below are the SHINE expectations for the next fortnight. Have a conversation with your child about what these expectations look like, feel like, are and are not. Model these expectations and support your child to reflect on the impact they have on others.
Using books, stories and novels to share reading time and teach positive qualities is another great way to support our children in growing to be responsible, resilient and respectful contributors to society. The three links below will take you to some lists of books you may already have access to or wish to source for your family.

Sports News
On Friday 23 April, students from Years 3-6 competed in the annual House Cross Country.
The weather was kind and the conditions were good for the competitors. The teachers were impressed with the stamina and determination displayed by all students. Every student who ran should be congratulated for their effort! A big thanks to the teachers for helping out with roles and also to the parents who were in a position to support their child/ren on the day. Hello Everyone
Tomorrow we will celebrate the Feast of Saint Catherine of Siena which will be a wonderful time to reflect on who she was and her great achievements.
St Catherine of Siena was born during the outbreak of the plague in Siena, Italy on March 25, 1347 and died on 29 April 1380. She was an amazing person, her devotion to her faith was very strong and she never wavered from her love of God.
We will begin the day with a Courtyard assembly where we will launch the day, the students will participate in a liturgy to celebrate Saint Catherine’s life followed by organised activities where students will learn more about Saint Catherine. We are looking forward to a fantastic day celebrating the special saint that our school is named after!
Just a reminder that the Sacrament of Reconciliation begins this week with Year 4S3 celebrating the sacrament on Thursday at 12:00pm. Next week the students of Years 4S7 will make their sacrament on Wednesday 5th May and 4S8 on Thursday 6th May and finally Year 4S4 and four Year 5 students on Wednesday 12th May. All of the ceremonies will begin at 12:00pm and finish at approximately 1:00pm. Please keep these students and their families in your prayers as they continue their sacramental journey.
Students in Year 4 and Year 5 who will be making their First Holy Communion, as well as family members need to book into ceremonies via Trybooking. A notice outlining the relevant information was sent to families last week via Operoo.
The dates for the ceremonies are as follows:
- Friday May 28 at 7:30pm
- Friday June 4 at 7:30pm
- Friday June 11 at 7:30pm
- Saturday May 29 at 11:00am and 1:00pm
- Saturday June 5 at 11:00am and 1:00pm
- Saturday June 12 at 11:00am and 1:00pm

Child Information Sharing Scheme and the Family Violence Information Sharing Scheme
The Information Sharing Schemes were introduced in response to Royal Commissions, coronial inquests and independent inquiries over the past decade that identified poor information sharing as a barrier to service collaboration with detrimental outcomes for children and families. The Information Sharing Schemes will enable schools and other prescribed Information Sharing Entities (ISE) to access and share relevant information to promote the wellbeing and safety of children, and to assess and manage family violence risk.
Phase One of implementation of the Schemes commenced in September 2018 and included key tertiary and frontline services, such as Child Protection, Maternal and Child Health Services and Victoria Police. From 19 April 2021, as part of Phase Two, universal services such as education and health will be authorised to share information using the Schemes. On and from this date, DOSCEL and its schools, Victorian government, non-government schools and centre-based education and care services, such as long day care, kindergarten and outside school hours care services, will be prescribed as ISE under the Child Information Sharing Scheme and the Family Violence Information Sharing Scheme and will have an expanded ability to collaborate and share confidential information with other authorised professionals.
The Information Sharing Schemes complement and expand upon existing information sharing and child protection laws and do not replace already existing authorisation to share information such as the Child Safe Standards, reporting to Child Protection or Victoria Police, the Reportable Conduct Scheme and other privacy and information sharing laws.
From the commencement of Term 2 2021, DOSCEL and its schools will also become Family Violence Multi-Agency Risk Assessment and Management Framework (MARAM) organisations and will be required to align to MARAM over time.
Information Sharing Scheme Entities can make contact with us by phoning 03 9702 1466 or email infoshare@stcberwick.catholic.
