Dear Parents,
Unfortunately, like many other workplaces, we currently have a significant amount of our staff unwell and unable to attend work due to isolation. As mentioned in previous newsletters closing the school is our last resort, however, parents need to understand that their children will have different teachers at times to help us accommodate the staffing shortages. I thank you for your cooperation as we continue to negotiate this unprecedented landscape.
Welcome Back Parents
As restrictions ease we are looking for opportunities to welcome parents back into the school after so long away due to COVID. Please keep the following dates free;
Thursday 28th July |
|
Tuesday 2nd August |
|
Please note that we will require any parents that are wanting to come into the school to sign in at the Office. We will have extra sign in opportunities available to ensure that this does not take too long.
Uniform Shop
I mentioned in the last newsletter that Jan Kennewell will not be continuing to operate the uniform shop beyond September as she has resigned from the position. I would like to make a correction for the last newsletter where it stated she was retiring.
After stepping through a long process, with the assistance of the Catholic Education Office, we will be moving to Noone Beaconsfield. The accessibility of Noone will be handy for parents as they operate a shop on Old Princes Hwy Beaconsfield.
We will inform parents once the official handover has occurred, however, in the meantime please keep ordering through Jan here at school.
Absences due to Covid
Please advise the office on 97021466 as soon as possible if your child tests positive to Covid.
Swimming
Our swimming program commences for Prep and Year 2 on Monday the 8th of August.
Safety Around the School Grounds
The following rules are in place for the safety of all students in the school. We ask that parents please respect the following rules;
- Children should not be arriving at school before 8.25am as they are not supervised. The gates will be locked until 8.25am. Parents requiring supervision prior to this time need to contact after school care.
- All cars leaving the roadway must turn left into Ridgemont Drive.
- Students waiting for siblings from SFX must wait inside the school grounds near the entrance gate. They are not to wait out the front of SFX.
Use of the Oval
As a school we would like the students to have use of the oval every day of the school year, however, in the middle of a wet winter it is not possible on some days due to how muddy it can be.
Football Posts
Over the holidays we had our football posts installed for the children to enjoy. Can you please talk to your children about the fact that whilst we want the students to enjoy the use of the posts we do not have full football matches at school. The children can enjoy games but there is no tackling.
Family Learning Conversations - FLC’s

Staffing News
Mrs Vindy Gunasekera has resigned from her position at St Catherine’s effective as of Friday the 14th of August. On behalf of St Catherine’s, I thank Vindy for her efforts over the years and wish her all the very best in the future.
It is with great pleasure that I can announce that Jisha George-Mampillil, who is currently teaching the class whilst Vindy is on Long Service Leave, will be remaining as teacher of the grade until the end of the year. This is a wonderful result for the students as Jisha is already familiar to the children and doing an excellent job. Jisha is very excited about continuing as 3S5’s teacher and I am sure that she will be made to feel welcome by all.

Hello Everyone
I hope that you are keeping warm and being kind to yourself.
Next Tuesday we have our Family Prayer Afternoon from 2.55pm, it would be wonderful to see as many families visit your child’s/children’s classroom to see how the teachers and students pray together.
Monday 8th August is the Feast of St Mary of the Cross MacKillop, who is Australia’s first saint. Mary MacKillop faced many challenges in her life but her faith in God and a strong belief that a Catholic education should be for everyone, not just those who could afford it which lead to many schools being established across Australia and her order, the Sisters of St Joseph of the Sacred Heart. Today there are over 600 Sisters of Saint Joseph living in communities in Australia, Aotearoa New Zealand, Ireland, Peru, Timor-Leste and Brazil. The sisters are engaged in pastoral work as well as in professional roles which include teaching, administration, social services, law, psychology, nursing, aged care, community development, adult education and support for new arrivals in Australia and New Zealand. To mark St Mary of the Cross MacKillop’s feast day each year level will plan a liturgy which will include prayer, music and scripture. Student’s will have the opportunity to learn more about Mary’s life and legacy through engaging tasks. Below is a prayer to St. Mary MacKillop which you might like to pray as a family.
Just a reminder that bookings for our First Communion Masses opened last Monday July 18th at 9am. The masses are across the first 4 weekends in October. If you have not booked in a day and time for First Communion for your child, could you please do so as soon as possible. Information about how to book can be found in your enrolment pack or by phoning St Michael’s Parish Centre on 97071355.
Yours in Faith

Ever-generous God,
You inspired St Mary MacKillop to live her life faithful to the Gospel of Jesus Christ and constant in bringing hope and encouragement to those who were disheartened, lonely, or needy.
We ask that our faith and hope be fired afresh by the Holy Spirit so that we too, like Mary MacKillop, may live with courage, trust, and openness.
Ever-generous God, hear our prayer.
We ask this through Jesus Christ. Amen.

Newsletter Week 3
School Captains
Hello, welcome to week 3!
Last week, the year sixes began Inter-school sport. Congratulations to all the participants, everyone tried their hardest and St.Catherine’s secured some wins! More rounds will be played over the next couple of weeks, if you would like to watch some of the games, you will need to sign into the school’s front office where the game is being held. (Our school doesn't have the facilities to run football games, meaning that even if your child is playing a ‘home’ game, it will be based somewhere else.)
We hope everyone has a lovely week!
From the School and Vice Captains, Luke, Mia, Aiden, Sienna, Alicia and Oscar!
T ball
On Friday 22nd July, the boys t-ball team set off to Pakenham to compete in the Casey South division. The boys played against two other schools, winning both games quite easily, thanks to a few home runs, and came home with the flag! This was an excellent effort as some of the players had never played the game before. They learnt a lot of the intricacies of T-ball thanks to the umpire of the day, which our boys took on to continue to improve their game throughout the day. It was wonderful to see the team show such great sportsmanship on the day as well as the support and encouragement for everyone around them. We want to wish them all the best as they move on to regionals in a couple of weeks.

Netball
Last Friday 22nd July saw our year 6 girls netball team compete at the Casey South Division netball finals at Cardinia Life in Pakenham. The girls played two matches. They won their first match convincingly. In their second game, they were up against stiff competition and ended up falling short by 5 goals. It was a great day and an excellent opportunity for the girls to play representative sport. Well done to all the girls for a fantastic effort!
